With all the changes that have recently occurred, work-life balance has become even harder to achieve. With much of our work life and personal life dependent on technology, it is now more complicated to separate the two.
Here are 4 tips that you can incorporate into your life to achieve a better work-life balance.
In the pursuit of more balance between your work life and personal life, one must understand that a perfect work-life balance does not exist. Therefore, it is important to let go of perfectionism and think realistically about your strengths and weaknesses as you plan, prepare and go about your day to day tasks. What are you already doing well? What areas can you improve in? What do you need to build on and develop these areas more? This may require you to start small and grow from there.
One of the reasons it may be hard to achieve a satisfactory work-life balance is because we have trouble prioritizing our goals. By prioritizing our goals, we are able to focus our attention on what matters most and avoid wasting time engaging in activities that aren’t as urgent. Try making a list of the items you want to work on each day and identify what needs to be accomplished first. Although it is impossible to achieve perfect work-life balance, prioritizing provides a sense of structure that allows you to engage in what matters to you most.
Although prioritizing your tasks and responsibilities is effective in helping you to achieve a better work-life balance, it is important to set boundaries both at work and in your personal life. Some boundaries include: setting a time to start and stop working each day and focus exclusively on family and friends; taking advantage of personal time off; and committing to block out social distractions while you’re on the job. With these boundaries in place, you are less likely to overindulge in some activities which may interfere with your work-life balance and are likely to be more productive and fully-invested in your goals. The key is learning to be 100% present wherever you are, whether at work or off-the-clock.
Care for yourself
Caring for yourself is necessary in order to achieve work-life balance but it is commonly overlooked. Practical ways of caring for yourself include getting enough sleep, exercising, eating a healthy diet, and focusing on your mental health. All these play a role in reducing stress levels and bolstering your physical health and energy levels, which make you a better employee.
