4 Tips On How To Avoid Distractions At Work

The struggle of staying focused in the workplace is one many people can relate to. Access to communication and entertainment on our phones and devices make it easier than ever before to get distracted while working. Here are four tips for avoiding distractions at work.

 

Limit Technological Interruptions

We’ve all been there… what starts as a quick look at Instagram somehow turns into 45 minutes of endless scrolling before we know it. Among the distractions many workers are faced with, technology is perhaps the biggest one of them all. These distractions may come in the form of our phone notifications, recommended videos, and interesting articles that lead us into a rabbit hole of scrolling through our social media feeds. 

 

It’s no surprise, then, that limiting technological interruptions can help us in reducing our distractions. If you find yourself wasting time on your phone every day, try some of these practical ways of limiting technological distractions:

  • Turn off your computer if you don’t need it for a given task
  • Turn off notifications
  • Utilizing phone settings like “Do Not Disturb” or “Screen Time Limits”
  • Try turning off your phone for certain times during the day or removing it from your immediate surroundings. 

 

Work Around Productive People

Our environment can significantly influence our performance in the workplace. Another way to help avoid distractions at work is by surrounding yourself with productive people. Co-workers can often be a source of distraction, but they can also motivate us to work with more focus. This is why it can be helpful to work with other colleagues who show focus in their work and intentionally limit time with colleagues who may be a distraction to you. 

 

Make Time for Breaks

Scheduling breaks can also help eliminate distractions because a lack of focus can be linked to fatigue and boredom. Many times we can find ourselves distracted simply because we are working for long stretches of time or overworking ourselves. As a result, in search of pleasure, our minds become distracted from our main tasks. One way to prevent this is by incorporating short breaks into your work schedule throughout the day. A 5-10 minute break every hour or two, depending on what works best for you, can make a huge difference. 

 

Be Aware of Your Habits

In order to minimize distractions, it is important to be aware of your working habits. We all work differently – some people may find it difficult to work in loud or crowded environments, whereas others may flourish in the same environment. Some workers may find themselves being more productive at night than during the day, and others may prefer working remotely instead of working in an office. It is important to learn what works best for you and observe what patterns most often lead you to become distracted or working most efficiently. Using this knowledge to restructure your schedule and routine, can help you to eliminate many of your distractions.
